Game Reserve Completes Rhino Dehorning Operation
Babanango Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal has successfully dehorned its entire population of rhinos in preparation for World Rhino Day on 22 September.
This vital conservation initiative, designed to protect these endangered animals from poaching, was conducted over two days with the support of Wildlife Solutions Africa.
Under the guidance of reserve ecologist Stuart Dunlop and wildlife vet Dr Ryan van Deventer, the operation involved carefully sedating the rhinos and dehorning them.
This humane, painless procedure aims to significantly reduce the risk of poaching – a persistent threat that has affected 229 rhinos in South Africa during the first half of 2024.
Bongani Khumalo, a wildlife monitor at Babanango, highlighted the importance of the operation, expressing pride in their role in ensuring the rhinos’ safety and well-being.
The success of this project highlights the dedication of the conservation team and the critical need for ongoing global support to safeguard these majestic creatures.
